Miahuatlán Día de los Muertos Preparations, Pan de Muerto, & Mezcal

Includes:

  • Personalized guide and translation service by a native English speaker

  • Comfortable transportation round trip from Oaxaca city (2 hours each way), all transportation during overnight stay

Day 1, 9am-12am

  • Quick breakfast of antojitos, little local snacks at our favorite roadside comedor

  • Visit to a traditional mezcal palenque, learning about the process and history of the mezcal of the region directly from the producing family (copper distillation)

  • Farm to table lunch of local delicacies prepared by a cocinera tradicional

  • Tasting of traditional mezcal made on site

  • A chance to purchase mezcal directly from the producers (price not included), our help packing it for travel

  • Settle in Rancho Los Nahuales, short afternoon siesta

  • Visit to a traditional bakery making pan de muertos

  • Visit to nighttime Día de los Muertos market and 100-year-old fireworks store to buy supplies for our altar

 

Day 2, 7am-Chapulines (*weather dependent) and wildflower gathering (optional), 9am-Breakfast-6pm

  • Early morning rise to gather chapulines (grasshoppers) and biruxe (wild marigold) for our altar

  • Breakfast at Rancho Los Nahuales

  • Participate in the local Día de los Muertos traditions with a local family including creating our own Day of the Dead altar

  • Tamale making and feasting

  • Head back to Oaxaca by 5pm, arrive 7pm

 

*Accommodations at Rancho Los Nahuales are modest but comfortable. There are 2 rooms with private bathrooms and 2 rooms with a shared bathroom available on a first come first serve basis. Note that there is no WiFi and limited cell phone reception at the ranch; our goal is to unplug and enjoy our rural surroundings in the heart of mezcal country.

**Proof of travel insurance is required for all overnight participants at time of booking.  If you do not have travel insurance we will provide it to you at an extra cost, no exceptions will be made.
